[i] Devon Archives has taken over from Exeter Westcountry Studies Library (EWSL) but not everything has been catalogued or catalogued correctly and I was informed that the centre is horribly understaffed (as all libraries). Nevertheless, when you do have a question, they are eager to help.

[ii] Leicester University Library carried out a Special Collections Project in the past and borrowed numerous interesting publications, including a large number of directories. These are available on line but the original source has not been credited. Few, if any, of the items they put on line are from their own collection.

[iii] The National Library of Scotland is very helpful and the images provided very high quality. Besides these two many other members of staff were helpful, e.g. Jenny Parkerson, and in February 2022 the staff arranged a video conference so I could inspect an item.

[iv] The Plymouth Central Library and the West Devon Record Office (WDRO below) work together but they each have their own catalogues. Nevertheless, one should search both catalogues as they have not been integrated and sometimes items are not where you would expect them.

[v] See note 16 above.
