[i] All NLS holdings are listed under accession N.72.f and, helpfully, maps are listed separately but as included in directory. NLS also has the first Swiss issue (1905) and this also has a map (V.380.f).

[ii] All CUL holdings have accession L481:26c.1.1 and contain a map. Maps in 5^th, 8^th, and 10^th editions based on NLS information who kindly provided details.

[iii] SOLO (library catalogue) lists all editions under Aleph 14738845 (1882 edition is on-line w/o map).

[iv]  In general, the Devon Archive´s holdings have the accession number 380 1025/PLY/#### with the last four digits being the year of publication, e.g., 380 1025/PLY/1902. 5^th Edition is (1890 / 1890r).

[v] BL catalogue - all under general reference P.P.2507.bdo (also in JISC catalogue). Shaw has 13^th and 15^th editions but these cannot be located (April 2021). Shaw omits 16^th edition but confirmed as present (April 2021).

[vii] Leicester University Library has posted the 5^th (1890) and 7^th (1895) editions online as part of their Special Collections project but no map is shown. These are believed to be borrowed from Devon Archives. 

[viii] The main work of reference for all UK directories is: Shaw, Gareth and Tipper, Allison; 1998; British Directories – A Bibliography and Guide to Directories Published in England and Wales 1850-1950 Scotland 1773-1950 - 2^nd Edition; Bloomsbury Academic; London. See entry 356 for the Plymouth Directory. Shaw and Tipper list copies of the Plymouth directory at both the Bodleian and at Devon Archives.  According to correspondence it is not in their collections. The Bodleian does have the 8^th and 10^th editions of 1896 and 1898. Devon Archives also report they do not have the 8^th edition of 1896.

[ix] The map has been archived separately to the directory (at 380 025/PLY/1895) and is with all probability the map stored under PM B/PLY/1895/SMI.

[x] PLY copy is torn and repaired with adhesive tape. A loose copy of the map is held at the WDRO under 4237/15 with manuscript date 1898: this could be from the 9^th or 10^th Edition.

[xi] Devon Heritage has CD of 9^th edition (£5). Two issues (6^th and 8^th) listed by Shaw are not in Exeter collection.

[xii] Shaw and Tipper list a copy at DevA but according to correspondence it is not in their collection.

[xiii] The map that accompanies the 13^th edition is separate from the directory. “Theophilus Creber’s Copyright Plan of Plymouth, Devonport, Stonehouse and Neighbourhood”. WDRO have a loose copy stored separately at 2766; loose copy held by DevA listed under PM B/PLY/1904/CRE (illustrated); they are both probably from this edition. Further copy at CUL.
